“Ocean Pollution: The Dirty Facts,” by Melissa Denchak was
posted on January 22nd, 2018. This is one of the articles that came
from NRDC.org that I am using for this blog. This article talks about the
importance of our oceans, and leads into the pollution of our waters. This
article is informational on how our ocean ends up getting polluted, and the breakdown
of fuels and garbage that eventually cause acidification. "It’s estimated that by the end of this century, if we keep pace with our current emissions practices, the surface waters of the ocean could be nearly 150 percent more acidic than they are now." This is a statement from Melissa Denchak, and this is when the article really stuck out to me. The article then leads into how garbage kills our ocean life, which starts a change in the
environment not only in the ocean, but affects us on land too.
I found this source to be very helpful to me as I am trying
to build my blog because it is very informational and includes facts that are completely
shocking.
Another source that I used for my blog is Marinebio.net. I
found the article, “Human’s Impact on the Oceans” very helpful because this is
what my concerns are about. This website was also very informational on the
impacts that are happening to our oceans. This source explains the actual
evidence that is found in the ocean, caused by us humans. This is a very big
eye opener.
The article proceeds to give you the definition of pollution and
the pollutants that are caused by mankind. Marine Science shows photos of
effected life and waters, because of us. Some things might be out of our hands,
but what efforts are we making to change things? Animals are dying, beaches are
closing, the environment is changing, and I’m curious to know if people care about this issue?
I liked using this source from Marine Science because they
inform the reader about the efforts of habitat restoration, and show you there
are some people out there that take initiative. These people are putting forth the effort
to help the ocean life and the clean-up process. There are so many factors to this, and I am
interested to take this blog further and make people aware of a few things we all can do to help this process change.
This is a very interesting blog to me. I am sure most people have never thought about how we are polluting the waters. I would be interested to hear about some of the shocking facts you mentioned. What is being done to clean up the ocean? I can tell you that boats pollute the water with metals and chemicals. A 2 stroke boat motor emits 25-30% of their unburned gas and oil mixture into the water. I do know that cruise ships are big polluters in several ways. I wonder if the shipping industry is doing anything about making ships cleaner. Do they have to pass an emissions test? I agree with you that ocean pollution is a big problem. We are also polluting lakes and rivers.
ReplyDeleteI am excited to see what you find out about what efforts are being made to help the ocean. I feel like you touched on areas that you found information but didn’t really tell us what you found. I also would be interested to find out what impacts sunscreens have on our ocean? You read about how they are damaging the reef but are they effecting any other parts because to me that is also considered a pollutant. Also, what are the effects that we are feeling on land from what is happening in the ocean? Are there any animals that are endangered or extinct now because of the impact on the ocean? Also, what are other countries doing to help in their efforts to save the ocean? There are so many questions that are unanswered or that people feel like are just not important enough to deal with yet until it gets really bad. Also, is the pollution a factor on areas that the water is clearer, for example does the Caribbean have less or no pollution?
ReplyDeleteI find this post to be interesting. It is interesting (and frustrating) how people are a main source of pollution that occurs in our oceans. I do not understand how or why someone finds it in their heart to be ok to throw away their trash into the ocean when it can be held onto or tossed in a trash can. Trash vans are located all over the place. I for one cannot even go up into the mountains or the lake and river and dispose of anything that does not respect the Earth.
ReplyDeleteI would add to this post the reasons why it is said that some things are put of our hands regarding this issue. Is it really? How much damage has been done thus far? How does it affect us on land as well?
I agree with the fact that there are people out there who do care. There are probably more people then we think. Out of the people who care what can be done to get them involved if not already? I also agree with the fact that pollutants are hurting our oceans. To what extent is this, what ocean life has been affected? Has it killed off species? Does it affect coral reefs as well? I highly agree that it is an issue and needs attention!
Not only is this frustrating but its heartbreaking to see the kind of destruction mankind is having on the earth like no other creature alive. Sometimes I wonder if we are going to become all the terrible ideas we picture our future to be. We seem to pride ourselves on trying to make the world a better place and change it but it should never have even gotten this bad and the only reason it dud was more humans to have a move convenient short life on this earth that would be here much longer after us. We are living amongst these creatures and wildlife and we should be doing everything we can to protect it! What do other countries do to protect it's beaches? I am curious as to the damage to ours versus other countries.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is very interesting there is so much going on in our oceans we really are unaware of. It shocks me just how much people don't care about the living animals in the ocean and only care about themselves. I like the fact that you put in about how the ocean is on they way to being 150 times more acidic do to the pollution we are putting into the ocean its so sad. If I were to have any suggestion on things you could add to this post it would be to go into a little bit more detail on what each source had to offer. I read just a little of what the article was made of but providing a few more supporting details would really give us the insight on what they had to offer as well. I agree with your post so much. We need to take action into fighting agents the oceans becoming more polluted do to our stupidity. Thanks for sharing great post!
